Peacock coal, also known as rainbow anthracite, is not a specific type of coal but rather a descriptive term for coal that exhibits a striking iridescent sheen on its surface due to oxidation of minerals within the coal. This effect is caused by thin films of oxidized minerals like iron oxide, sulfur dioxide, or sulfides. This specimen was collected from llewellyn and Pottsville formations in Luzerne & Carbon Counties, PA.
